God’s Faithfulness Is a Shield and Buckler

This meditation is based on a passage for January 26, 2011 in the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Psalm 91

Reflection and Question: What a fantastic assurance of God’s protection for those who believe! This poem is filled with images of God’s loving care for us in the face of so much that feels terribly threatening to us. I cherish the promise that God’s “faithfulness is a shield and buckler,” and admit that I had to look up what a “buckler” is. It is a small shield that probably went out of fashion after guns replaced swords. But I get the point that God will keep me from harm and this comforts me in all I do. Which images here give you the greatest solace?

Prayer: Though a thousand may deride this radical trust,
Ten thousand laugh as I seek to do your Will,
Yet I will surrender myself to You, abandoning myself into your Hands
without reserve.
For You have sent you angels to watch over me, to guide me in all my ways.
Amen.
